Summary: | The Sacrament of Sacred Ordination confers an indelible character. A man validly ordained cannot cease to be a cleric, but he can lose the clerical state. The author exposes and explains the various ways of losing the clerical state; treats the meaning of the law and the values underlying the canons (CIC cc. 290-293 and CCEO cc. 394-398), and investigates the practical implementation of these canonical procedures from the time of the promulgation of the Latin and Eastern Code. As per the norms of the Church "laicization" can be defined as an act by the legitimate authority that takes away. from a cleric the lawful use, except for emergencies, of the power of orders; deprives him of his rights, privileges, and clerical status; and renders him juridically equivalent to a layperson. |
