Whakarāpopototanga: | In recent months, large numbers of the faithful in the Diocese of Blackacre have been canceling their subscriptions to the diocesan newspaper. As a result, the diocese has had to reduce the prices that it charges for advertising space. To raise the advertising prices back to their previous levels, the diocesan bishop has mandated that at least 5 0 percent of the parishioners at each parish must subscribe to the newspaper. If they fail to do so, then the bishop requires the pastor to pay for the subscriptions out of parish funds. At St. Zephyrinus Parish, very few parishioners subscribe to the diocesan newspaper. The pastor, Father W, declines to pay for any subscriptions, except for one for the parish office. The parish cannot afford to pay for subscriptions for nearly half the parish, he says, and, in any event, he does not consider such an expenditure to be a wise use of parish funds. (The cost of the subscriptions for half of the parishioners of St. Zephyrinus would be between two-thousand and four-thousand dollars.) May Father W refuse to pay for the subscriptions? |
