| Sumario: | In the Corinthian community, people are troubled by the question of whether or not it is good to practice celibacy. Being unmarried himself, Paul basically affirms this question by reference to his own example. Nevertheless, there are several other problems that are connected to the Corinthian question, for which he gives instructions to the married, the widowed, and the bachelors in 1 Cor 7. Thus, for the married, a celibate life possibly means divorce from their spouses. According to Paul, however, this is forbidden by a word on divorce that he attributes to Jesus himself. Marriage, in turn, detracts from the relationship with God but can be an effective way to avoid porneia. An argumentation analysis of the sections in 1 Cor 7 in which Paul turns to the consequences of the Corinthian question for the married exemplifies Paul's commitment to multiple propositions and norms. Accordingly, his argumentations are differentiated. With regard to the divorce issue, Paul argues for the preservation of marriages but also recognizes cases in which divorce occurs. |
