TR These reflections upon Luther's reformation and its actual meaning for the Catholic Church sketch first the evolution of the catholic view of the Reformer's person and work. The perspective changed. Until the beginning of the 20th Century Luther was looked at in a mainly negative manner. In Die Reformation in Deutschland (1939/40) Joseph Lortz drew attention to the religious earnestness of his endeavour. Not without some difficulty that view has been received even in officiai Statements of the Catholic Church. Beside this historical approach there is a more theological and systematic one, which sees in Luther's theology a different manner of stating the Christian faith. Such a way should not be a priori unorthodox. – Justification is the heart of Lutheran theology. The importance of this doctrine is explained within the context of the reformer's experience and polemics. The doctrine of justification has been revisited in the modern bilateral dialogues. The question is raised, how far it still divides Catholics and Lutherans. Without dealing extensively with the recent common declaration on justification (1998), the present article deals with the background of such a declaration. – In the conclusion the problem of the lasting excommunication of Martin Luther (1521) is touched. This fact continues to bear upon the relations between Catholics and Lutherans. Even if historians would be overcharged when asked to reconstruct equitably the process that led to the condemnation, it seems most desirable that the churches would state in an official way that this condemnation can no longer bear upon their reciprocal relations. The anathema of the 16th century has been overcome by the ecumenical situation, that creates a new context for interpreting and understanding the memories of the past. |
