Sumario: | Jonathan Laurence’s book is scholarship of the first water. The breadth and depth of the work are highly praiseworthy even as its central contentions are open to serious debate. He first argues that Catholicism has harbored conceptions of a nexus between faith and state power—especially in the Papal States—that are similar to those found in Sunni Islam; and that the latter at times has harbored conceptions of religious hierarchy—especially in the caliphate—that are similar to what Catholicism long has maintained. In light of this permeability, there is little reason to speak of any claims concerning religious structure or the relationship between religion and the state as "essentially" Catholic or Islamic (pp. 9-11). |
