Summary:That form of Christianity known as Eastern Orthodoxy, or simply Orthodoxy, has historically been rooted in cultures in which Orthodoxy has been privileged over other Christian and religious groups. Different Orthodox churches to this day bear the identities of the nations in which they once were, or still are, the majority religion: the Greek Orthodox Church, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church, and so on. Even when by historical fate, Orthodox churches have lost their majority status (as when Islamic peoples conquered the Byzantine Empire) or when Orthodox peoples came by way of immigration to historically non-Orthodox cultures and nations (as in the case of Western Europe or North America), Orthodox churches have typically sought to preserve not only their religious but also their national identity.This dimension of Orthodoxy has complicated its relationship with the secular, liberal democratic states in which Orthodox churches find themselves today in...
