Riepilogo:The capitulation treaty of August 17,1585 concluded between Alexander Farnese and the city of Antwerp granted the Antwerp Protestants a reconciliation term of four years. Within this period they had to convert to the Roman Catholic Church or to leave the city. This article highlights the difficult position of the Lutheran community in Antwerp during the four years reconciliation period and the Twelve Years Truce (1609-1621). The Lutherans who remained within the city walls had to cope with the deliberate counter reformation strategy of the Antwerp bishop and the clergy. Yet they succeeded to develop surviving strategies and to organize a Lutheran community "under the cross" as is clear from two exceptional sources: the judicial file of an arrested Lutheran and the correspondence exchanged between the leaders of the Lutheran community in Antwerp and in Amsterdam.
