Sumario: | Poskim forbid wife battering. However, it is not clear how comprehensive this command is. While the majority allow educational beating, a minority group (from France, Provance and Germany, the eleventh through the thirteenth centuries C.E.) completely forbid wife-beating. The present study has dealt with the question of whether or not Posek's approach to the enforcement of bill of divorcement (Get) on a husband involved in forbidden beating is connected with his general attitude toward the status of women. To pursue this search, most prominent and influential Poskim were chosen. Two hypotheses were tested: 1. A permission of educational beating should be connected with a lenient approach to wife-beating and thus such a Posek avoids Get enforcement. 2. A complete prohibition of wife-beating should be connected with a severe approach to such an offense and thus Get enforcement is expected. The findings are in line with these hypotheses. A support for these findings was found in contexts not associated with wife-beating as well: while many advocate Get enforcement in other circumstances, Poskim who allow educational beating avoid Get enforcement. Contrarily, those who completely forbid wife-beating usually avoid Get enforcement for the claim of "mais alai," but enforce Get on beating husbands |
