With these words Paul VI expressed his main concern during the audience he gave in September 1963 to those attending the fifth congress of the "Associazione degli Archivisti Ecclesiastici". "The ecclesiastical archives must be carefully preserved because they reflect the life, the work and the meaning of the Church in world history". From the beginning the Church has meticulously fulfilled this mission. In these pages we provide a brief overview of the efforts the Church has made in the course of the centuries to preserve its documents (I) 1 ; following this, we will discuss the legislative decisions of the recently enacted Codex of 1983, comparing it to the Codex of 1917 (II) |
