Cette correspondance révèle un monde divisé, autant politiquement que religieusement au sein duquel le droit était encore en gestation. Quatre d’entre elles intéressent particulièrement l’historien du droit. Adressées à son suffragant Victor, évêque de Grenoble, et au comte local Ansemundus, elles dévoilent les moyens juridiques grâce auxquels l’évêque de Vienne s’est efforcé, son épiscopat durant et au service de l’Église, de trouver la meilleure solution au conflit qui était porté à sa connaissance. L’évêque, par ailleurs, a fortement contribué à une conversion pacifique des Burgondes au catholicisme par une réflexion approfondie sur les outils juridiques qui étaient à sa disposition. Ses lettres démontrent la très grande capacité d’adaptation de l’évêque au contexte politique et juridique de son époque. | ||
| 520 | |a Among the letters of Avitus of Vienna (bishop before 494, died 518), 98 have survived. These letters reflect an image of a divised world, religiously and politically. At this time, the law was instable. Five letters are particulary interesting for historians of law. Being adressed to Victorius of Grenobla (bishop) and Ansemundus (count), the letters were seen as a way either of using influence as much as possible through consel the course of juridical matters which he often thought dangerous. He contributed finally to a smooth conversion of the Burgundians of the catholic creed. His letters are evidence of his insight for understanding the political and juridical scene. | ||
