520 |a The Code of Canon Law (1983) and The Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (1990) contain the canonical discipline of the Roman Catholic Church, which was revised after the Second Vatican Council. The present study sets the two codes in their historical background and gives an account of their preparation. It compares their respective titles, structure, the preliminary canons, and the norms regarding the Christian faithful. The two codes differ as regards penalties, ecumenism, clerical celibacy, and the concept of customs. CCEO applies the principle of subsidiarity better by vesting legislative powers in the synods of the Patriarchal and Major Archiepiscopal Churches. There are some Eastern canons with no Latin counterpart. Recently, some changes were introduced by Pope Francis in both the codes while respecting their specificity. 
520 |a Der Codex Juris Canonici (1983) und der Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium (1990) enthalten die kanonischen Vorgaben der lateinischen Kirche und der katholischen Ostkirchen, die nach dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil überarbeitet wurden. Die vorliegende Studie stellt die beiden Codices in ihren historischen Zusammenhang und gibt einen Überblick über ihre Entstehung. Dann werden jeweils Titel und Aufbau sowie die einführenden Canones und die Normen, die sich auf die Gläubigen beziehen, verglichen. Die beiden Gesetzbücher unterscheiden sich im Hinblick auf das Strafrecht, die Ökumene, den Zölibat und das jeweilige Konzept des Gewohnheitsrechts. Der CCEO wendet das Prinzip der Subsidiarität besser an, indem er die Synoden der Patriarchalkirchen und grosserzbischöflichen Kirchen mit gesetzgebenden Vollmachten ausstattet. Einige Normen des CCEO haben keine Entsprechung im CIC. In jüngster Zeit werden durch Papst Franziskus einige Veränderungen für beide Codices erlassen, während ihre jeweilige Eigenheit gewahrt bleibt.
