Description
Summary:In 1827, the Roman Congregation of the Index censored two works by English authors, namely Mary Martha Sherwood and Legh Richmond. The publication of these religious booklets was attributed to the Bible Society in Malta, a Protestant organization highly despised by the Catholic censorship authorities. These two cases give evidence that Malta, as the location of the Protestant Anglophone world in the Mediterranean, functioned as a gateway for the transfer of books from England to Rome. This study forms part of the author's PhD thesis on 19th-century English literature on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
