Riepilogo: | The procedure for appointing the auditor of the Spanish Rota began with the formal presentation of the candidate by the King, that the Pope accepted; then, the king appointed him by decree published in the Gazette, and the Apostolic Chancery issued a papal Brief. Then, the new auditor took office, after issuing the oath of secreto servando and the profession of Catholic faith in a solemn ceremony before the Apostolic Nuncio - born president of the tribunal of the Rota- with the assistance of officials and guests. This procedure, followed since the late eighteenth century, thanks to the agreement between Charles III and Clement XVI, was normally applied to the early twentieth century without important difficulties. However, in the twenties, during the Military Directory of Primo de Rivera General, there were three diplomatic incidents between the Spanish government and the Holy See due to the violation of this agreement by the Spanish authorities, because, although the Government had the right to nominate candidates - like presentation of bishops- should never exercise that if it not was sure previously that the person chosen would be accepted by the Holy See |
